MTN South Africa deploys AI to detect data tunnelling and analyse customer traffic

MTN South Africa has confirmed it is using artificial intelligence to detect “data tunnelling”, a technique that allows users to disguise paid traffic as traffic to websites the operator has made free to access. The disclosure, first reported by ITWeb and quickly framed as a hunt for “gigabyte thieves”, understates what MTN is actually doing. The underlying problem is not new.
