The radio access network ( RAN ) is one of the most hardware-dependent domains in telecommunications. Operators traditionally purchased tightly integrated solutions where radios, baseband processing, software, and management systems all came from a single vendor. While this approach delivered reliability and optimized performance, it also locked operators into long technology refresh cycles, expensive upgrades, and limited flexibility when introducing new services.
