In 2012, the World Health Organization classified the exhaust from diesel engines as a carcinogen. That decision infuriated the German auto manufacturers, primarily Volkswagen, Mercedes, and BMW. They had all profited handsomely from selling diesel powered automobiles following the OPEC oil embargoes in the 1970s.
